Iris and Maya had been best friends since they were three. They were now both five years old, which is approximately a lifetime in best-friend years. They had a system. On Tuesdays, Maya came over after school. On Thursdays, Iris went to Maya's. On Saturdays, they sometimes did nothing at all, and that was also fine. One Tuesday, Maya said: "Iris, you are my best friend forever." Iris said: "Yes, I know." This was, in fact, the level of certainty they both operated on. There was no room for doubt. Doubt would have been a waste of time. They kept playing. The afternoon kept doing its job. And later that night, Iris went to sleep, and so did Maya, and somewhere between their two houses, the moon kept doing its job for both of them at once.
